If your system is on an earlier version of Java, you must upgrade to the required version. If your current version of Tomcat does not support Java 8, you must upgrade to a newer version. We recommend upgrading to Tomcat 8.5. When upgrading, ensure that the Tomcat service is stopped before installing the new version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-theme-palette-7-background-color has-background\">Note that if you are intending to use Microsoft IIS as your web server, you must still install Tomcat. IIS does not provide the same functionality as Tomcat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Double click on the Tomcat Application server installation file that you downloaded. In our example it is called apache-tomcat-8.5.23.exe. You may get a Windows Security Warning &#8211; click <strong>Run<\/strong> to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extract the apache-tomcat-8.5.23 folder to your destination folder&nbsp; &#8211; <code>C:\\ExtraView<\/code> &#8211; so that you end up with <code>C:\\ExtraView\\apache-tomcat-8.5.23<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat1-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Include the selected defaults<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat2-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Open a command window, as Administrator, and navigate to the destination folder<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can modify the ports Tomcat will run on, if you already have something else running on these ports. In this example, we will leave the defaults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat3-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Browse to the Java that you installed for ExtraView.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat4-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure that the destination path for the Tomcat installation does not contain any empty spaces in the folder names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat5-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once Tomcat has successfully completed the installation, let it start up and close the installer window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat6-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can modify the service parameters once it has been created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Navigate to the Tomcat destination folder, and into the&nbsp;<code>\/bin<\/code>&nbsp;folder where you will see the&nbsp;<code>tomcat8w.exe<\/code>&nbsp;application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Double click the&nbsp;<code>tomcat8w.exe<\/code>&nbsp;file to initialize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the General tab \u2013 set the service to start automatically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat5-3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Java tab, you can select a different installation of Java if the JAVA_HOME did not pick the correct installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Set the memory parameters to a minimum of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>128 MB<\/code>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>Initial memory pool<\/strong><br><code>512 MB<\/code>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>Maximum memory pool<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We generally do not recommend setting the Maximum memory pool (the Xmx parameter) above 1024 megs at maximum. If your system usage is predicted to be high enough that you will require more memory, we strongly suggest installing a clustered set of multiple Tomcat nodes under a load-balanced Apache web server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the Java Options section in the Properties section for Java 9 (or greater) you must add these two additional options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>--add-exports=java.base\/sun.security.action=ALL-UNNAMED <br>--add-exports=java.desktop\/jax.imageio.spi=ALL-UNNAMED<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"435\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/v25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/tomcat.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29672\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, on the General tab \u2013 start the service:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat7-3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter&nbsp;<code>http:\/\/localhost:8080<\/code>&nbsp;into your local browser, and you should see the Tomcat test page:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/docs-stg.extraview.com\/extraview-media\/images\/ig\/windows\/tomcat8-3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the APIs to Insert Large Amounts of Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When using an API to insert very large amounts of text within a single issue you may encounter an error within the API function, exhibiting as a null pointer exception that originates within the Tomcat application server.&nbsp; This error may be remedied by inserting the modifying the Connector entry within the Tomcat configuration file.&nbsp; An example of the altered configuration is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>&lt;Connector port=\"8082\" protocol=\"HTTP\/1.1\" URIEncoding=\"UTF-8\"<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;connectionTimeout=\"20000\" maxPostSize=\"209715200\"<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;redirectPort=\"8442\" maxParameterCount=\"1000000\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<code>maxPostSize&nbsp;<\/code>parameter increases the size of Tomcat\u2019s buffer used to process the API command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tomcat 8.5 Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Modify the&nbsp;<code>&lt;Context&gt;<\/code>&nbsp;entry in the&nbsp;<code>context.xml<\/code>&nbsp;file to be<br><code>&lt;Context useHttpOnly=\u201dfalse\u201d&gt;<\/code><br>You should add the following to the&nbsp;tomcat\/conf\/context.xml&nbsp;file:<br><code>&lt;!-- Force use of the old Cookie processor (because this Tomcat version uses RFC6265 Cookie Specification) --&gt;<br>&lt;CookieProcessor className=\"org.apache.tomcat.util.http.LegacyCookieProcessor\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Locate the following section in the Tomcat configuration file:<br><code>&lt;!-- Uncomment this to disable session persistence across Tomcat restarts --&gt;<br>&lt;!--<br>&lt;Manager pathname=\"\" \/&gt;<\/code><br><code>--&gt;<\/code><br>and alter to use this setting:<br><code>&lt;!-- Disable session persistence across Tomcat restarts --&gt;<br>&lt;Manager pathname=\"\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tomcat 8\u2019s standard installation altered the way in which several characters were accepted as valid URL characters.&nbsp; These are characters such as&nbsp;<code>|<\/code>,&nbsp;<code>{&nbsp;<\/code>and&nbsp;<code>}<\/code>.&nbsp; Some of these characters have long been used within the ExtraView application.&nbsp; To enable Tomcat\u2019s handling of these characters, insert this line into the&nbsp;<code>Catalina.properties<\/code>&nbsp;file:<br><code>tomcat.util.http.parser.HttpParser.requestTargetAllow=|{}<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tomcat 8.x has a security measure which mandates that you must configure a security measure.&nbsp; This measure rejects all calls to the Tomcat server unless a secret word is part of the request, with requests typically being sent by the Apache web server.&nbsp; Without this configuration, the Tomcat server will appear to spin without responding to the request or will respond with a 404 Not Found error.&nbsp; To configure this feature:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the&nbsp;<code>server.xml file<\/code>, ensure the section for the AJP 13 connector has these parameters:<br><code>&lt;Connector protocol=\"AJP\/1.3\"<br>address=\"0.0.0.0\"<br>port=\"8009\"<br>redirectPort=\"8443\"<br>secret=\"<em>changeme<\/em>\" \/&gt;<\/code><br>Note the port number&nbsp;is typically&nbsp;<code>8009<\/code>.<br>Note the secret word should be changed to your secret word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the workers.properties file where you set the AJP 1.3 connector, add a parameter:<br><code>worker.tomcat1.secret =&nbsp;<em>changeme<\/em><\/code><br>Note the secret word should match the entry in the&nbsp;<code>server.xml<\/code>&nbsp;file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restart Tomcat after altering its configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ExtraView 11 requires a minimum of Java JRE 8.
